St. Petersburg is known as the soul of Russia. Formerly known as Leningrad, St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Russia's most beloved tsar, Peter the Great. Among its outstanding attractions is his famous bronze statue in Decemberists' Square.
Don't miss a visit to the Hermitage Museum, with one of the world's most priceless collections, housed in the magnificent Winter Palace and Hermitage complex. Explore the treasures in the Russian Museum and Nevsky Prospect. Visit St. Isaac's Cathedral for a look at its magnificent interior. Just outside the city is Tsarskoye Selo and Catherine's Palace. This was the residence of the Imperial Family until the time of the last Emperor.
For a true taste of Russia, enjoy an authentic Russian meal at one of the local restaurants or purchase tickets for a legendary performance at the theatre, opera or circus.

Some of the sights not to be missed:

If there is one avenue that must be visited to discover the city - it is certainly Nevsky Prospect.
Gogol dedicated a short story to it that begins:
"Nothing is more beautiful than Nevsky Prospect, in St. Petersburg at least. It is everything, nothing is lacking from the splendour of this artery, queen of beauty of our capital".
